Magnitude 3.0 earthquake off Long Island felt by many
This morning at 7:22 am EDT, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake registered about 30 miles off the south shore of Long Island.
While a 3.0 on the Moment Magnitude scale (which replaced the Richter scale years ago) ranks this quake as a rather minor one, its shallow epicenter depth of 7.1 km (4.5 miles) enabled it to be felt on land. According to the USGS, it was felt across all reaches of the Island.
Fortunately, no damage was reported, and no tsunami alerts were issued.
If you felt the earthquake, you can report it here.
