Traffic stop on Southern State in Merrick leads to foot chase

MERRICK -

A traffic stop on the Southern State Parkway in Merrick led to a foot chase Saturday night.

Detectives say they pulled over Rayon Gounga after they saw him driving with the hood of the vehicle blocking the windshield around 10 p.m. That's when they say the 20-year-old got out of the car, ran across six lanes of traffic and into the woods.

After an investigation, officials say Gounga was driving with a suspended license and an outstanding warrant for stealing a car from Baldwin.

They say the vehicle he was driving Saturday night was also stolen.
