Officials say a Long Beach special-education teacher accused of abusing several students will be fired Tuesday night during the Long Beach School District's board of education meeting.
The state Legislature gave the district the green light to fire Lisa Weitzman, 37, Monday morning. Weitzman underwent a disciplinary hearing following allegations she abused several of her non-verbal special-education students in the middle school during the 2012-2013 school year.
As News 12 reported, the allegations range from locking a student in a bathroom to verbally abusing them. In one instance, Weitzman is accused of digging a high heel into a child's foot.
Weitzman has been on paid leave since 2014. According to Newsday, the district has paid her more than $540,000 as of last August.
In a statement from the Long Beach school district, officials say Weitzman would be officially terminated at the meeting. The district goes on to say, "The safety and well-being of our students is the district's top priority and we are grateful that this matter has been concluded for the benefit of our children."
Attorney Jerry Misk, who is representing the parents of four autistic children who say the kids were verbally and physically abused by Weitzman, says he'll be asking the judge to reopen the case.
"The federal judge who is overseeing this case has closed the case pending the outcome of this decision," says Misk.
Several other parents in the district have also filed lawsuits against Weitzman alleging similar abuse of their children.
