Riverhead to upgrade, install cameras in downtown area to increase safety

More security cameras could soon be coming to downtown Riverhead.
The town has $160,000 in federal community development block grants that needs to be used by June. The town says nearly $125,000 would be spent for the cameras.
The $125,000 plan would be implemented in several phases, which would include installing a central monitoring system for those cameras at the police headquarters.
The next phase would be to install cameras in Grangebel Park, the Long Island Rail Road station and in parking lots near Peconic Avenue and Main Street. The cameras would supplement the current MTA ones.
The town has to have public hearings on the topic, which will be done in May, before officially signing off on the plan to use the block grant money for the cameras. The town supervisor and police chief say they're already on board with the project.
