Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says Albany lawmakers have agreed to support her taxpayer protection plan.

The plan will phase in any changes in taxes due to the reassessment over a period of five years.

That means if someone's house is reassessed and their taxes go up $1,000, they would pay that total over time, instead of paying that total up front. The county executive says it would work the other way as well.  If a reassessment comes in lower, it would go down gradually. 

“The reason is so that our taxpayers have some protection and some time to phase in their taxes - make any adjustments that they need to make,” she says.

Ethan Falkove says he's one of the lucky ones because his taxes are staying the same. But for his neighbors with taxes going up, he thinks this is the best way to handle it. 

“Some people have significant increases I understand. And to significantly increase it right away isn't fair for people,” he says.

Once it becomes official in Albany, Curran says it must pass the Nassau Legislature before residents see any changes.
