A new initiative is focusing more resources on driving down crime in Hempstead.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder are teaming up with Hempstead village officials and the Hempstead Village Police Department for what is being called the Hempstead Initiative.
Beginning two weeks ago, county police provided Hempstead police with extra resources to target areas of high crime and known gang activity. Since the beginning of the program, Ryder says 100 people have been arrested, 25 of whom are known gang members.
The initiative is being funded with asset forfeiture money. Ryder says the initiative will continue until they have the situation "under control."
