Nats silence sleepy Mets bats in home opener loss

Posted:

The Mets offense was stifled in their home opener at Citi Field Thursday, as they fell to the Washington Nationals 4-0.

The first hit of the game between either team didn't come until the fifth inning, but two walks, a wild pitch and a squeeze bunt gave Washington the lead in the second.

Washington's Victor Robles led off the sixth with a solo homer for the team's first hit, and the Nats tacked on two more late runs in the ninth.

Noah Syndergaard went six innings, surrendered two runs on just one hit with six strikeouts and two walks. He was outshined by opposing pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who struck out nine in the shutout.

The Mets played their home opener less than 16 hours after wrapping up a sweep of the Marlins in Miami, a quick turnover that many fans called into question.

Just three Mets were able to garner a hit in the losing effort -- Wilson Ramos had two, while Jeff McNeil and Amed Rosario had one.

The Mets have Friday off and return to action Saturday at 1 p.m., with Steven Matz on the mound.
