Residents: LIRR construction poses possible safety hazard in Blue Point

Posted: Updated:
BLUE POINT -

Residents in Blue Point say they're concerned that the ongoing construction at an LIRR storage facility expected to take several years is creating a potentially dangerous situation for them.

Residents Artie Kurtz and Michael Keil say they're fuming over the uptick in activity at the site, which includes loud trucks idling at 3 a.m., piles of debris, and 18-wheelers making deliveries all day long.

They also say they're concerned about the activity at this railroad yard because it could pose a danger to students at an elementary school across the street considering the truck traffic.

Brookhaven Town Councilman Neil Foley says he's asked railroad officials to consider its neighbors and to look into another site further down the track.

The LIRR tells News 12 it promises to be a good neighbor and it will limit deliveries and schedule work hours between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The agency also says it's not storing anything that would potentially contaminate the groundwater.

The LIRR says it plans on using the yard for storage and as a staging area for two projects.
