Newark cheer squad makes nationals, needs funds to get there
The Candy Elite All-Star Cheerleading squad is preparing for the opportunity of a lifetime to compete in the National Championship in Orlando, Florida – but getting there might be a problem.
The team unexpectedly won the regional cheerleading competition in Wildwood last weekend to punch their ticket to the big show. Now, they just need the funds to get there.
“This has always been their goal since the very beginning of the season, but to get there and not actually be there to compete will make them extremely sad," says Coach Wydeyah Hay.
The team, made up of middle and high school students from Newark have been holding fundraisers, looking for corporate sponsors, and have launched a GoFundMe campaign, but they are far from their goal of $25,000.
"We've been waiting for this moment and I feel like it has come,” says cheerleader Kayla Douglas. “Now we just need all the support and help we can get."
The national competition is in May.
