Residents, lawmakers slam Nassau for failing to install red-light camera signs

LEVITTOWN -

Nassau County is taking some flak for failing to install signs at intersections warning drivers of red-light cameras there.

There's a new law on the books requiring the county to install the signs by March 1. But some legislators say the process is moving too slowly.

Legislator John Ferretti says only 30 percent of the required signs have been installed. He says the county's failure to install them sends the wrong message.

"We call on the county to follow the law, install the signs and make sure this red-light program is about safety and not revenue," Ferretti says.

County Executive Laura Curran's office responded by saying that 99 percent of photo-enforced signs have been installed. The statement continues: "'Stop Here on Red' signs are more difficult to install due to location limitations at the intersection. They require…drilling into the sidewalk for installation."

The county also says weather and coordinating with the state Department of Transportation played a role in the delay, but it says all signs will be installed by April 15.
