The Coast Guard says its crews rescued two people who had to abandon a sinking fishing vessel near Fishers Island, off of the East End of Long Island.

The Coast Guard says its watchstanders received a radio call from the crew of a 55-foot commercial vessel around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. They said their boat was taking on water in one of its fish holds.

Rescue crews from Montauk and New London responded, and passed a de-watering pump to the crew members. But the pump was unable to keep up with the rate of flooding, and the two crew members abandoned ship, the Coast Guard says.

Rescue crews quickly picked up the two, and the boat capsized within one minute of their evacuation in about 60 feet of water.

“This incident highlights how critical it is to have appropriate safety gear, emergency radio beacons, life jackets, and survival suits,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jesse Diaz, the search and rescue mission coordinator for Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound. “Anything can go wrong at sea, even if you’re a professional mariner. The safety gear saved the lives of these crew members today.”

The two crew members were taken back to shore without medical concerns, the Coast Guard says.
