Nassau businesses brace for impacts from LIRR 3rd track work
Construction at a Long Island Rail Road grade crossing on Covert Avenue in New Hyde Park has businesses down the road in Floral Park concerned.
Crews will be rebuilding a portion of Covert Avenue in New Hyde Park so it will go under the LIRR tracks. It is one of seven LIRR crossings that will be eliminated as a result of the Third Track project.
The concerned shop owners in the business district are about a half-mile from the construction, where there may be detours.  There are more than 60 businesses on Covert Avenue in Floral Park, and all of them are mom-and-pop stores. Owners are expressing concerns that the construction could affect their bottom lines.
In the MTA said in a statement to News 12 that it is “working closely with communities to minimize the impact to businesses and residents during construction. We've been working with businesses on Covert Avenue throughout the process and taking their input very seriously and incorporating that into our plans."
Construction is scheduled to start April 15 and last into the fall.
