Parents: ‘Dangerous’ walk to school is ‘accident waiting to happen’
Parents in Northport say the route their kids have to walk to get to Northport Middle School is anything but safe.
Families who live less than a mile from the school must either let their kids walk or drive them since they're not eligible for a bus. Parents say the walk down Waterside Road and 25A is dangerous, especially in the winter when there is snow and ice.
There is no guardrail separating kids from the traffic and when there is snow and ice they sometimes have to step into the road.
Lisa Jahrsdoerfer, of Northport, says she is nervous and worried that one day a student will be struck by a car.
"It does feel like it's an accident waiting to happen," she told News 12.
The state Department of Transportation sent News 12 a statement saying: "Safety is our top priority. NYSDOT is finalizing a study of the requested area, which began in September to coincide with the beginning of the school year. We anticipate the study to conclude very soon and will make appropriate safety enhancements as recommended."
After seeing News 12's coverage on this story, state Sen. Jim Gaughran wrote to the state DOT asking for further safety studies on 25A.
