Charges have been upgraded against a Sayville man accused of gouging his grandmother's eyes.

Micheal Grief, 30, now faces multiple charges of felony assault and up to 25 years in prison.

Suffolk County police say Grief had an argument with his grandmother over Grief's use of her debit card. It happened last month at the Sayville Garden Apartments.

During the fight, prosecutors say the grandmother ran out of their apartment and pounded on a neighbor's door, begging for help. District Attorney Tim Sini says it was there where Grief used his thumbs to gouge her eyes with enough force "that the globes of her eyes ruptured."

A neighbor found the grandmother on a stoop, screaming in pain and bleeding profusely.

The grandmother has undergone surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital. Doctors say there's a less than 1 percent chance she'll regain her eyesight.

In court, the assistant district attorney said when Grief was told that he blinded his grandmother, "He shrugged his shoulders and said, 'So.'"

While Grief has no prior arrests, the district attorney's office says he does have a history of mental illness and was committed for a couple of years when he was younger but didn't elaborate.

The judge set bail Wednesday at $500,000 cash or $1 million bond. Grief is due back in court March 15.
