State and local officials are making preparations as another weather system takes aim at the Northeast.
Forecasters say the exact track and timing of the storm will determine snowfall totals, but Long Island is currently expected to see 4-8 inches across much of Nassau and Suffolk, with less amounts along the South Shore and East End.
Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joe Saladino says the town is doing everything it can to make sure the roads will be as safe as possible.
"We're getting lots of sand and salt thorough the weekend on our roads for the highest level of safety,” he says. “…People really need to be cautious, get their shopping done now and try to stay home as much as possible."
Gov. Andrew Cuomo also urged New Yorkers to stay safe. He says the storm could create difficult driving conditions for the Monday morning commute.
The governor offered tips for traveling safety:
- When winter storms strike, do not drive unless necessary.
- Use caution on bridges as ice can form quicker than on roads.
- Wet leaves on roadways can cause slippery conditions, making it important to drive at slower speeds when approaching patches of them.
- If you must travel, make sure your car is stocked with survival gear like blankets, a shovel, flashlight and extra batteries, extra warm clothing, set of tire chains, battery booster cables, quick energy foods and brightly colored cloth to use as a distress flag.
- If you have a cellphone or other communications device such as a two-way radio available for your use, keep the battery charged and keep it with you whenever traveling. If you should become stranded, you will be able to call for help, advising rescuers of your location.
