Police: Teen charged in racist threat against Riverhead HS
Police say a 16-year-old has been charged in connection with what the police chief described as a racist threat against Riverhead High School.
Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller says someone made a 911 call from inside the school between 9:30 and 10 a.m. Tuesday, making a threat that he says was racist in nature against other groups of students in the high school. He did not specify the exact nature of the comments.
Police determined the phone call came from a cellphone within the school, and officers took two male students into custody. They charged a 16-year-old with falsely reporting an incident.
A lockout at the school was lifted around 11:20 a.m.
The high school remained open for the rest of the day, although many students went home early.
