Developer drops proposal for $75M Lynbrook apartment complex
A developer has dropped a $75 million proposal for a controversial apartment complex in Lynbook.
The Farmingdale-based firm Terwilliger & Bartone Properties applied to build a six-story, 200-unit building on a lot near the Lynbrook Long Island Rail Road station.
The Village Board rejected it in November. Opponents said the project would have created congestion issues, placed a burden on the school district and changed the character of the village.
Lynbrook Deputy Mayor Hilary Becker calls the withdrawal a victory for residents.
"That's truly a big step in the right direction," Becker says. "However, there's nothing that prevents him from coming back again."
Mayor Alan Beach sent News 12 a statement contradicting Becker that says: "Despite the clarity of the Board's rejection, some have chosen to ignore this and make statements over the last few weeks that are simply untrue about the Board and the developer."
And developer Anthony Bartone said in a statement: "We will not resubmit unless the project is significantly smaller than our previous proposal, and only after community feedback from residents."
For now, the village-owned lot will remain as it is. Despite the developer bailing on the project, downtown development remains a major issue as residents head to the polls to vote for mayor next month.
