East NY woman experiences 3 ceiling collapses in NYCHA building
An East New York woman with a sick 8-year-old daughter has experienced multiple ceiling collapses in the past few years, including twice this month.
Amaris Jackson Munoz lives in New York City Housing Authority's Long Island Baptist Houses. She says the ceiling collapsed in her apartment in 2016, in her daughter’s bedroom earlier this month, and again in the living room on Tuesday.
She says it was too close a call for her daughter, who has sickle cell disease.
"Imagine that hitting her? The stress alone could be fatal to her," Munoz told News 12.
A NYCHA spokesperson told News 12 that they are helping the family move to another apartment. Munoz says she’s not happy about moving. She and the resident spokesperson say this is a common problem in the building.
"If you are the worst person in the world, you don't deserve to live in any kind of environment like this," says Munoz.
According to a NYCHA spokesperson, there are no other apartments currently experiencing ceiling collapses. However, there is one apartment where staff has identified water stains.
