Investigators are treating the incident as a homicide.
Police say they are looking for the group of males they believe are responsible.
Employees at the bodega say surveillance cameras at the store were not working Wednesday night.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
Police told News 12 that Pompey had a violent criminal past with multiple drug and weapons charges. His longtime landlord also told News 12 that he was involved with drugs and that his mother had been trying to get him on a better path for years.
Joseph Campbell, a friend of the victim, was shocked at the brutal death of Pompey.
"He was about all the jokes, very comical and that's what I liked about him, I liked his positive energy," says Campbell. "He was a good guy. He wasn't really all about trouble."
