Police: Man fled scene of crash that killed passenger

Police have arrested a driver who is accused of crashing into a pole in Coram and then fleeing the scene on foot, leaving a passenger to die.
It happened around 4 a.m. Sunday on Middle Country Road near Homestead Drive.
Police say Cruz Emelio Tum-Tipaz, 25, of Westhampton Beach, was behind the wheel of a Nissan Murano that was headed east. The vehicle crossed into the westbound lanes and veered off the road, striking a metal utility pole, according to investigators.
Police say Tum-Tipaz fled the scene on foot.
One passenger, identified as 28-year-old Juan Morales Cuterez, of Westhampton, was pronounced at the scene.
A second passenger, 53-year-old Eledao Bolaj-Garcia, was hospitalized with serious injuries.
