Rain replacing sleet across LI, could be heavy overnight

WOODBURY -

The snow is long gone across Long Island, but has been replaced by sleet and rain.

A winter weather advisory does remain in effect for all of Long Island until midnight.

Dry air held the snow off later than expected earlier Tuesday, but things eventually got going during the late morning hours. A few slushy inches accumulated across Nassau and Suffolk before sleet took over during the afternoon.

As we head into tonight, temperatures will continue to rise to around 40 degrees, and the sleet will change to plain rain. Drivers are still urged to be alert for slippery conditions on untreated roadways.

The rain could be heavy at times overnight, and that could cause some localized street flooding. Rain totals over an inch are expected.

For Wednesday, clouds will give way to some sunshine, but it will be quite windy. Temperatures in the low-40s are expected.
