Neighbors voice concerns for wildlife from catering facility construction

CENTERPORT -

Concerned residents rallied in Centerport Saturday, saying that runoff coming from construction at the former site of the Thatched Cottage may be seeping into the water and killing fish and wildlife.

A new catering facility called the Water’s Edge is being built there.

“They didn't care about the water that's around that area because if they really did, they would have put a boom around the area to protect that wetland,” says Robert Schwartz, the rally’s organizer and member of the Bald Eagles Group.

Managers at Water's Edge say they have taken the necessary precautions by putting up bales of hay and silk netting to protect the water and they say the Department of Environmental Conservation found no violations during their inspection.

Legislator Dr. William Spencer, who works and lives in Centerport, had the water quality tested to be sure. He says he will have results in four weeks.

Rallying residents say Centerport is being overdeveloped and there is a need to protect the quality of life in the area.
