A new state law signed earlier this week will give federal workers who were furloughed during the government shutdown a 90-day extension to pay their property taxes.

State Sen. Jim Gaughran co-sponsored the bill that's offering some relief to those federal workers.

"We're just hopeful that it is something that gives them a tool so as they're trying to juggle which bill to pay, they don't have to worry about paying their property taxes," Gaughran says.

Randy Brown showed up for work at New York TRACON in Westbury despite not being paid. He says it was hard even to make ends meet with his usual paycheck and the shutdown only made it worse, especially when it went into effect just before Christmas.

The shutdown began Dec. 22 and affected about 800,000 federal employees. It lasted until Jan. 25.

The bill will allow additional extensions if there is another federal government shutdown.
