LINDENHURST -

A man who was shot while driving on Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst says the shooting stemmed from a case of road rage, according to police.

As News 12 has reported, a 24-year-old man was shot and injured as he drove eastbound on Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst around 2 p.m. Sunday.

Police say the driver pulled over after he was shot and his passenger called 911. Emergency crews rushed the victim to the hospital in critical condition. The passenger wasn't hurt.

The victim told police that it all began when the suspect tried to cut them off.

"They said the subject tried to cut them off and when they tried to cut him off again, they wouldn't let them in," says Suffolk Police Lt. Shaun Spillane. "So everybody stopped at the traffic light at Straight Path. When the traffic proceeded, they said the subject pointed a gun out the window and fired a single shot at them."

The victim and passenger told police that the suspect was driving a dark-colored sedan. Lt. Spillane says officers are now reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses.

The shooting has neighbors in the area on edge.

"This is my home. My family is here, my friends are here," says Lindenhurst resident Alexis Drucker. "I don't want anything to happen to my family or friends."

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
