Critics of a plan to build dozens of luxury apartments in Huntington say it will change the ambiance of the village and worsen the parking problems there.
Developer John Kean is proposing a four-story, 84-unit luxury apartment building on Main Street, near Gerard Street and Stewart Avenue. Kean's attorney made his case before the Zoning Board of Appeals for several variances in order for the project to go forward.
A meeting on the project was set for Thursday night, but it soon became clear that the Town Hall room was too small to handle the crowd. About 30 minutes after the hearing before the Zoning Board, the speakers stopped working, making it impossible for the 300 people waiting outside in the hallway to hear the testimony. That's when the board called for an adjournment.
Residents say their numbers made a statement about their opposition to more development in downtown Huntington.
The Zoning Board says the new time and place for the next meeting will be announced on the town's website within the next 30 days.
