A Brooklyn animal doctor is offering tips to keep pets safe in the frigid temperatures and snow that are coming this weekend.

Dr. Jorge Halty of the Animal Hospital of Morris Parks says there are several things to keep in mind when winter hits.

First, Halty says dog paws should be protected, as salt can get in between their toes and irritate their skin.

Many pets owners think their fur coats are enough to fight the cold but Halty thinks otherwise. He suggests getting an extra layer on them.

When snowfall accumulates, Halty says to try and avoid letting pets run through deep snow without checking it first. He says there could be sharp objects hidden beneath the surface.

Above all, Halty wants pet owners to make sure they avoid frostbite.

"They get this burning. The tip of the ears, the nose, the lips, the paws, especially the paws you know," says Halty. "And that's very dangerous because this burned tissue, then it comes off so sometimes they have to do amputation."
