Police say a hit-and-run driver killed a man over a $22 gas bill Monday morning in front of a South Hempstead station.
The crash happened shortly before 7:30 a.m. at the Pit Stop station on Grand Avenue.
Nassau police released surveillance video of the incident Monday afternoon. In it, the driver of a mid-90s black GMC accelerates and runs over the station manager, identified as 59-year-old Cemal Dagdieviren, of Levittown. Police say the driver of the vehicle asked a gas station attendant to fill up his vehicle, but he began acting suspicious. The attendant added $22 worth of gas to the tank, but then asked the driver to pull over. The driver claimed he didn't have cash, and then police say he tried to offer a fake credit card. When confronted by the manager, police say the suspect hit the gas pedal.
Dagdeviren was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police describe the suspect as a tall black man in his 30s, who has dreadlocks. His vehicle did not have license plates or a registration sticker. The SUV was last seen going southbound on Grand Avenue.
News 12 is told that Dagdeviren was an immigrant from Turkey who is survived by a wife and two adult sons.
Police ask anyone with information to reach out to the Nassau police homicide squad or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
