Police: Woman dies after being pinned under car in Copiague parking lot
Police say a woman died after being pinned under a car in a busy Copiague parking lot Saturday afternoon.
The incident happened on Merrick Road in front of the Fine Fare Supermarket at 4 p.m.
Investigators say 55-year-old Valentyna Todorovych, of Lindenhurst, was walking through the parking lot when she was struck by a 2001 Honda Civic that was backing out of a parking space.
Police say the driver meant to step on the brake pedal but hit the gas pedal by mistake, striking Todorovych and pinning her under the vehicle. Three cars were also struck.
They say several Good Samaritans rushed to help the victim right after the collision, and that they were able to lift the car off of her before EMTs arrived at the scene.
Officials say Todorovych was pronounced dead a short time later at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip.
Police say no criminal charges have been filed against the driver so far.
