Mother says her son was on the right path before fatal Soundview shooting

The mother of Nelson Ramos, who was fatally shot earlier this week in Soundview, told News 12 that he had been turning his life around since his release from prison eight months ago.
Lydia Rodriguez says her 29-year-old son, a father to three children, had a new job in Hunts Point. She remembered him as a “loving person” who “everybody loved” in the neighborhood.
Officers say two men shot 29-year-old Nelson Ramos several times in the face and torso near the Monroe Housing Complex in Soundview before fleeing on foot toward Taylor Avenue.
Police released new video of the two suspects leaving the scene on foot before getting inside a dark SUV driven by a third unknown person.
Rodriguez is now comforted by Ramos's dog, Zena. She told News 12 that she will be raising his children again, just as she did when Ramos was locked up for two years on gun charges.
“I'm going to make sure that I do what he asked me to for his children, bring them up,” she says.
NYCHA declined News 12’s request for comment about the shooting death. The NYPD says they are still searching for three suspects.
