CENTRAL ISLIP -

A Bay Shore man accused of driving while high and leaving the scene of a crash is facing upgraded charges.

It's been a long road to recovery for Rose Pesce after she and her husband were hit on their motorcycle by a driver allegedly high on drugs. The crash happened in July on the William Floyd Parkway in Shirley.

Police say Deris Medlock Jr. was high on marijuana and PCP when he slammed into the Pesces' motorcycle and another car. They say he fled the scene only to crash nearby.

Medlock was back in court Friday to face upgraded charges from the incident. The 31-year-old is now charged with second-degree assault and other offenses.

Prosecutors asked in court that Medlock's license be suspended, saying he should not be allowed to drive. The judge granted that suspension.

Medlock is due back in court Feb. 5. If convicted on the top charge, he could face a maximum of two to six years in prison.
