Police fatally shoot armed man, ending Greenport standoff

A standoff with police ended with the fatal shooting of an armed Greenport man.
Police received a call around noon Thursday for a suicidal man with a gun inside his 65275 Middle Road home. He was identified as 63-year-old Robert Myers.
Southold police first responded and requested for hostage negotiators to come to the scene.
Police say negotiators spent three hours talking with Myers, who fired shots inside the house, at officers and at an armored police vehicle. They did not return fire at that point.
Investigators say Myers expressed a desire to be killed by police.
Suffolk police say negotiators were able to get Myers to agree to come out of the home, without weapons, around 4:20 p.m. But they say he came out with a gun and swung it in the direction of an officer who then fired his weapon, hitting Myers in the chest.
Myers was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital and pronounced dead.
Police remained on scene through the night.
