Officials say two people have died following a house fire in New Hyde Park Sunday morning.

The fire sparked around 3 a.m. at a home on North 12th Street. Police say five people were inside at the time.

Neighbors tell News 12 that the occupants included a young brother and sister who were staying at their grandparents' house while their parents were in Atlantic City. Police say there was also a 57-year-old tenant inside the home.

Crews had to rescue the 68-year-old grandmother and the 4-year-old girl through a back window, according to officials. They suffered smoke inhalation and were brought to the hospital in critical condition, where they were later pronounced dead.

Officials say that structural damage made it more difficult for crews to rescue the child and her grandmother when they arrived on scene.

The grandson, who is 10 years old, was forced to jump from a second-story window. The fire chief tells News 12 that the boy landed on top of a car, then crossed the street to a neighbor's house. He was hospitalized and listed in stable condition.

"I'm praying that they're going to be OK, they've got to be OK," says neighbor and family friend Chester Sloma. "To see what happened to the house is heartbreaking."

The grandfather and the tenant were able to escape by themselves, and police say they were uninjured.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time, but authorities say it appears to have been accidental.
