Police say Vanessa Zaman, a recent Amityville High School graduate, was shot and killed last week by her father, along with her 18-year-old cousin, in Virginia.
Abdool Zaman, 39, was arrested in Queens this week and has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Vanessa Zaman moved in with her cousin Leona Samlall and Abdool, her biological father who she had recently reconnected with after her 18th birthday in October.
The Dispatch reports that Vanessa became worried about Samlall’s safety and took her cousin and the baby she had with Abdool from the Orlando home. They went to stay with Samlall’s mother and stepfather in Highland Springs, Virigina. On Dec. 13, they were both fatally shot one block from the apartment.
Vanessa’s mother, Saveeta Barnes, of Massapequa, wrote on her Instagram page that "the loss of child is like losing your inner soul."
News 12 spoke to police in Virginia who said Abdool Zama is fighting extradition from Queens to Virginia. He has another court date in Queens in January.
