A Centereach 19-year-old who spent years fighting a life-threatening medical condition is having one of her dreams come true thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Lexie Roth was surrounded by friends, family, former classmates from Centereach High School and first responders from the Centereach Fire Department as she had her wish granted by the foundation. Roth will get to meet her idol, Olympic gold medalist Dalilah Muhammad, and train with her ahead of Roth's spring track season at Adelphi University.
"This is the best Christmas I could ever ask for!" Roth exclaimed. "To receive a wish from the foundation -- it's really an honor and I'm really so, so grateful."
Roth underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor, which resulted in hydrocephalus, also known as water on the brain. It's a condition that can cause brain damage.
In a moment meant to celebrate her recovery, Roth was thinking of others. She said there are many other kids who deserve the honor more than she does.
Roth and her family leave for Southern California on Jan. 4.
Make-A-Wish is working on 146 wishes in Suffolk County.
