Walls of dirt collapsed Friday as construction workers were installing a cesspool at a new home on AJ Court in Riverhead, burying one worker up to his waist.
Officials say they got the call around 3 p.m. Friday to a new housing development. The worker was buried down in the pit, unable to get out.
Multiple agencies responded, including the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Chief Rod Richardson says the construction worker was pulled out of the dirt by around 6 p.m. He says the worker was conscious the whole time and surprisingly calm.
Police say the worker was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital as a precaution, but he didn't appear to be hurt.
