Police: Career criminal, friend charged with murder in Hempstead shooting

Two men are charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with a Hempstead shooting.
Two people were shot on the morning of Oct. 19 on Wellesley Street. The deceased was identified as Demetrius Winfield.
Police say 26-year old Jamik Cannon, of Hempstead, is a career criminal who has now added a murder charge to his rap sheet. His friend, 23-year old Brian Marshall, was also arrested and charged in that same shooting.
Police say the shooting was not random and likely stemmed from numerous fights between groups of people.
Residents said at the time that they were rattled because there had been three shootings within three weeks.
At the courthouse Wednesday, Cannon's friend called the situation "an injustice" but refused to elaborate. Marshall denied taking part in the shooting. Both defendants were held without bail.
Cannon was previously charged in a 2016 robbery of a North Bellmore liquor store. In that case, Cannon was shot in the shoulder by the store owner.
