According to multiple reports, Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed late Monday night that Emergency Management head Joseph Esposito will be leaving his position as commissioner but will continue to lead OEM until a replacement is found.

The suspected move provides one answer to the confusion that erupted Monday after Esposito showed up to work despite reports that he was fired Friday over his handling of last month's snowstorm.

Many local leaders are coming to Esposito's defense.

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson tweeted “My experience with Commissioner Esposito and his team has been a great one and I hear this from other council members as well. They are responsive, communicative and helpful when local disasters hit. I hope this isn't true. Esposito is one of the competent folks in city government."
