A plan to build a massive new medical research facility on the vacant land surrounding the Nassau Coliseum moved forward Monday despite some concerns voiced by local lawmakers.
Nassau lawmakers on both sides of the aisle voiced concerns at a joint meeting of the county Legislature's rules and planning committees about BSE Global and Rechler Realty's plan to construct a "live, work, play" development in Uniondale.
The proposal is anchored by a 225,000-square-foot Northwell Health research facility and is complemented by entertainment and retail developments as well as multifamily housing.
The plan is backed by Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, but requires approval from the Legislature to move forward. During a presentation from members of the county executive's office, Long Beach Republican Denise Ford questioned the decision to choose Northwell Health as the project's anchor tenant, saying, "I feel like we're helping a monopoly here."
Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams pressed for specifics on what a benefits package for the community might include.
"You came to this body not even knowing what an amount would be that's fair to the community, but at the same you think we're going to give you the authority ... to negotiate that agreement going forward?" said Abrahams.
Glen Cove Democrat Delia DeRiggi Whitton questioned the proposal's overall process, and Republican William Gaylor wondered about the impact the development would have on local service providers.
Representatives from Curran's office reminded lawmakers that this was just the first step in a long, deliberate process.
Despite concerns, the committees voted unanimously to allow the full Legislature to consider the future of the Nassau Hub. That vote is expected to take place Dec. 17.
