Members of a mosque and two FedEx workers were involved in a brawl in Sunset Park this afternoon that landed several people in the hospital, and police say three people were arrested.
News 12 is told it started just before 1 p.m. following a funeral that was held at a mosque along Sixth Avenue. Witnesses say a FedEx truck was trying to navigate through the congested street when it struck a 46-year-old member of the congregation.
Witnesses say they believe road rage was a factor, noting there were many double parked cars on Sixth Avenue between 62nd Street and 63rd Street because of the funeral.
After the FedEx truck struck the man, a witness from the mosque says the congregants then surrounded the vehicle and tried to get the truck to stop. The witness says words were exchanged, and then the fight turned physical.
Police say a 23-year-old man who was attending the funeral punched one of the FedEx workers in the face. Then that worker's partner took a fire extinguisher and hit the 23-year-old man in the head, they say.
The first FedEx worker then allegedly pulled out a box cutter, and witnesses say he was waving it around before he slashed a 56-year-old congregant in the hand.
A mosque board member says the FedEx workers then started waving items from their truck that they used as weapons.
Police say three of the people involved in the fight were treated at NYU Langone Hospital with minor injuries. Emergency responders say the man who was hit by the truck was also taken to Maimonides Medical Center.
Police say three men were taken into custody, including two FedEx workers and one congregant.
In a statement, a spokesperson for FedEx says, "We are aware of preliminary reports regarding this disturbing incident and are cooperating with investigating authorities to determine the facts. Until then, further questions should be directed to local law enforcement."
