Nassau officials are warning that the holidays can turn to disaster in just seconds.

The Nassau Fire Academy in Old Bethpage performed a demonstration Thursday showing how a Christmas tree -- and the room it's in -- can go up in flames in under two minutes.

Officials say a tree should be kept in a home for no more than two weeks and to give it plenty of water. They also say to be sure to buy a tree that is as fresh as possible.

"When you go to buy it, make sure the tree is bounced. You bounce it on the ground and check how many needles drop," says Nassau Firefighters Museum Chief John Murray. "If too many needles drop, don't buy that tree. Or you can run your hand on a branch. Again if too many needles come off, don't buy that tree."

As for lights that adorn the tree, officials say they should be stored neatly in an air conditioned place during the summer. They also say to buy a new set once every few years.

Nassau's fire marshal says emergency crews respond to at least one Christmas tree-related incident every year.

The potential danger of Hanukkah menorahs was also discussed. Officials say to be sure to put candles out every night and to keep them away from anything flammable.
