The MTA's 2019 proposed budget is in and it looks like another fare hike is on the way.

The first MTA public hearing is set to kick off later today in Manhattan, followed by another in the Bronx on Thursday.

MTA officials say they want the public's perspective as their budget for 2019 to 2022 is over $800 million less than what they had projected in 2017. They're now trying to reduce costs any way they can to avoid reducing service that many already say is lacking. 

Other hearings will be held across the city, as well as in Westchester and on Long Island over the next week.

The MTA is considering two options to offset decreased ridership and avoid mass worker cuts. One option is raising the base fare to $3 and $3.35 for a single rider ticket with small increases on unlimited passes. Another is keeping the base at its current $2.75 but putting big hikes on monthly unlimited passes for riders.
