A Franklin Square charity that helps disabled Long Islanders is seeking help recovering from last week's snowstorm.
Gina Centauro runs Rescuing Families with her husband and brother. They hold monthly yard sales, and the money they raise is used to buy building supplies to help renovate homes for disabled Long Islanders. They just finished fixing up John Tribble's home in Wyandanch.
"They did work from their heart," Tribble says. "They work from their heart, and that's the driving force."
But Mother Nature did a number on the charity's inventory. They store everything under tents until it's time to pack up for the winter. Since the forecast only called for a little snow, they thought they'd be OK.
"All of a sudden we're looking from the kitchen window and I see one tent collapse from the weight of the snow," Centauro says. "It was like a domino effect."
The group has only been able to salvage some of the supplies that were in the tents. They're looking for help replacing their tents and storage containers so they can continue using the money they make to help other families.
More information can be found at Rescuing Families' Facebook and Instagram pages, or by calling 516-697-9403.
