AAA: 54 million Americans traveling for Thanksgiving

OLD WESTBURY -

AAA predicts a record 54 million Americans will be traveling by road, rails and air for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Secondary roads were busy all day Wednesday, especially Glen Cove Road, right near the entrance to the Northern State Parkway. There was plenty of brake slamming and horn honking.

Despite the fact that gas prices are higher than they were this time last year, AAA officials say those 54 million traveling Americans will be going more than 50 miles to their holiday destinations. It's the highest number since 2005.

AAA credits the high numbers to the economy.

"People have money in their pockets," says AAA Northeast spokesman Robert Sinclair. "Household net worth is up. Personal income is up."

Neal Goodman makes the trip from Boston to Jericho every Thanksgiving to see family.

"This is the fastest trip I've had because for the first time ever, I was smart enough to get up at like 5 in the morning," Goodman says. "No problem with the traffic."

With temperatures expected to take a deep dive going into Thursday, auto experts recommend doing some last-minute checks before hitting the road.

"Make sure your battery's in good shape," says John Tirpan, of TNT Automotives. "Make sure your fluids are up to level, your tire pressure is where it's supposed to be."

AAA also says 4.7 million Americans would fly to their destinations on Wednesday, the second-busiest travel day of the year, behind the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
