Police: 2 dogs found with stab wounds; man charged

A Brentwood man is accused of a gruesome act of cruelty against his family pets.

Police say they were investigating a domestic incident at Malik Fields' home after they discovered two dogs with stab wounds. Police say there were four other dogs in the house that were not harmed.

A pit bull, named Storm, died. The other, named Chocolate, was treated at Animal Medical Hospital of Centereach.

Frankie Floridia, of Strong Island Animal Rescue, says he wants to see stricter penalties for people who commit these types of crimes.

"People who abuse animals are also people who can end up abusing people," says Floridia. "Serial killers have a history of abusing animals first."

An order of protection has been put in place to prevent Fields from interacting with any of the dogs. Fields will be arraigned Wednesday on aggravated animal cruelty charges.
