Nassau County Executive Laura Curran has committed to sending tax impact notices to residents.

Nassau homeowners likely received in the mail in the past few weeks an assessment document that has facts, figures and percentages related to the way the county is now going to assess property value.

Many residents say they were confused by the letter; they didn't quite understand what it meant for their tax dollars.

The county acknowledged as much, and now Curran has signed legislation that will allow Nassau to provide impact statements to residents.

The idea is that residents will able to see a dollars-and-cents estimate as to what the changes in the assessment will mean to them.

Republican county lawmakers have warned that the assessment change will lead to wild swings in tax bills for property owners; Curran, who’s a Democrat, says it will ultimately result in a fair and equitable system for all taxpayers.

Tax assessment expert Jeff Gold operates the Facebook page "Nassau Grieve Your Tax Assessment - Free." It has more than 20,000 members.

"We've had a lot of people screaming and being really worried, but when we really run their numbers, they are actually going down," he says.

The notice will go out to residents by Dec. 1.

The assessment changes are expected to impact taxpayers in 2020, but Curran says she's working with state lawmakers on legislation that would allow the adjustments to be "phased in" over a five-year period.
