Community members along with PETA and Long Island Orchestrating for Nature were protesting on Saturday asking the Town of Oyster Bay to stop an aquarium from coming to the Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa.
SeaQuest Holdings has put in a proposal to add an aquarium location inside the mall. The company has several other locations across the country.
John Di Leonardo with PETA says hundreds of animals have died at other SeaQuest locations.
Members of PETA say although they are against most aquariums they are especially worried about this company.
"This is a very shady business with very unethical business practices, as well as a long history of animal mistreatment," says Di Leonardo.
In a statement, Town of Oyster Bay spokespeople told News 12 that they welcome all public comment prior to considering the application.
Massapequa native Alec Baldwin has also asked the Town of Oyster Bay to deny SeaQuest's application in a written letter.
News 12 reached out to SeaQuest Holdings for a statement about the proposed aquarium in Massapequa but has not yet heard back.
