A nonprofit organization has built a custom house in Smithtown for a Marine Corp. veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan.

Marine Lance Corporal Matias Ferreira lost both of his legs and broke his pelvis when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while serving in Afghanistan in 2011.

The new home, donated by Homes for our Troops, features more than 40 major special adaptations for accessibility.

These include widened doorways for wheelchair access, a roll-in shower, and pull-down shelving in the kitchen.

The 26-year-old veteran serves as a full-time police officer in Suffolk County.

Ferreira will be living in the home with his wife Tiffany and his young daughter.
