Residents are asking for answers after a Rockville Centre village employee was apparently caught on camera removing a candidate's campaign signs, but the village says it’s because of an ordinance.
Richie Montonez, of Rockville Centre, says his political signs were stolen from in front of his home, along with many other neighbors on his street.

“I checked the footage. And when I did I noticed it was taken early Thursday morning by an employee seemingly of Rockville Centre, in a car with the Rockville Centre logo sign,” he says.

Neighbors tell News 12 there are signs for different Democratic candidates all up and down the street, but the only ones that were taken were for Judy Griffin.

Griffin, a Democrat, is running for state Assembly. She says her team only put signs on the lawns of residents who asked for them.
“I've lived here since 1994 and I've never heard of anyone's signs getting removed,” Griffin says. “It's surprising and shocking to see government officials on government time, in a government vehicle, removing my signs.”
The village released a statement saying, "The village of Rockville Centre, like other municipalities throughout Long Island, have an ordinance that states no signs of any kind on the curb strip."

Rockville Centre Mayor Francis Murray says it was the superintendent of buildings who removed all signs from the curb strips.

“There is a village law and I guess he decided to take all signs off the lawn. And right now we're not doing it anymore,” says Murray.

Montonez says the signs that were taken from his yard have not been returned.
The mayor says the village will be discussing the situation this week, when employees are back in the office.
