Helping find care for her father who was badly injured in a motorcycle crash inspired a Long Island woman to open a new facility that helps veterans at no cost.
Allison Scerri started New Beginnings Community Center after her father suffered a traumatic brain injury. They found that the different care he needed became difficult and time-consuming.
The Medford rehabilitation center provides veterans with physical therapy, emotional support and socialization skills.
Robert Titza, a former Marine and NYPD officer, suffered a stroke in 2007 and was told he would never walk or talk again. His mother Josephine, desperate to find help for her son, found New Beginnings, which helped Titza get back on his feet.
Ruban Luciano suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him blind, paralyzed and with depression, but he began to find hope after receiving treatment at New Beginnings.
Another treatment of which veterans can take advantage for free is hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which may help with insomnia, depression and mood swings.
Scerri's father died four years ago. Despite the loss, she vows to carry on her work of spreading hope and healing.
