Police: Drunk man broke into Melville home, stole car

A Deer Park man was arrested on Halloween night for allegedly breaking into a home, and then stealing a car while drunk.
Police say 32-year-old Jemel Edwards broke into a house on Jacob's Path in Melville around 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The homeowners say they confronted Edwards when he walked into their kitchen. They say they forced him outside, and then realized their car keys were missing.
Edwards had allegedly stolen their Toyota Camry, but didn't make it far.
Police say a patrol officer found the vehicle stopped just a half-mile down the road about 10 minutes later. They say the car was running and in drive and that the suspect had his foot on the brake.
"It was a scary thing, just the thought that someone was in my house," says Fernando Jimenez. "Then it got even scarier because my wife found a pair of shoes in the laundry room that obviously belonged to him. So, that led us believe he might have been here when we got home."
Police say this is Edwards' second DWI offense since April 25, 2018, upgrading his DWI charge to a felony. He was also charged with burglary and grand larceny. Bail was set at $30,000.
